Clinical Description
VETALGIN VET is a veterinary injectable medicine containing Analgin (Metamizole) with analgesic, antipyretic, antispasmodic and antirheumatic properties.
It provides central analgesic activity and helps relax smooth-muscle spasms, making it particularly useful for painful abdominal conditions such as colic. The antispasmodic effect is accompanied by peripheral vasodilation and improved blood supply to striated muscles.
Indications / Recommended Uses
VETALGIN is indicated for relief of pain and spasmodic conditions, including:
- Colic and other spasmodic conditions of abdominal organs
- Acute and chronic arthritis
- Rheumatic conditions of muscles and joints
- Neuritis and neuralgia
- Tendovaginitis
- Oesophageal obstruction due to foreign bodies – to help relieve spasm
- Gastritis in small domestic animals – to help prevent vomiting.
In horses, it is indicated for relief of pain and intestinal spasm in colic and acute gastric dilatation, among other label uses. In pigs, the leaflet also lists cervical spasm during parturition and certain inflammatory conditions in piglets.
Dosage & Administration
According to MSD's product information:
- Cattle: 8 mL per 100 kg body weight
- Horses: 20–60 mL
- Calves: 5–15 mL
- Sheep & Goats: 2–8 mL
- Pigs: 10–30 mL
- Cervical spasm in pigs: 5–10 mL IM
- Dogs: 1–5 mL.
Administer by intravenous injection in acute conditions or by deep intramuscular injection. The official leaflet specifically states that the subcutaneous route should not be used, because it may cause tissue irritation.
Dose and duration should be determined by a registered veterinarian.
Key Benefits
VETALGIN provides combined pain-relieving, fever-reducing and antispasmodic activity in a single injectable formulation.
It is particularly useful for colic and painful smooth-muscle spasms, as well as musculoskeletal pain associated with arthritis and rheumatic conditions.
Contraindications & Precautions
Do not use in cats.
Do not administer subcutaneously.
VETALGIN should not be used in animals with disturbances of the haematopoietic system.
Use only under veterinary supervision, particularly when treating food-producing animals.
Withdrawal Period
MSD's current India product page gives a general withdrawal period of:
Meat: 18 days
Milk: 3 days.
The detailed leaflet contains species-specific withdrawal periods, so for food-producing animals the exact withdrawal applicable to the treated species should be confirmed from the current pack/leaflet.

Any unexpected or severe reaction should receive prompt veterinary attention.
