Clinical Description

Melonex 2.5 mg contains meloxicam, an oxicam-class NSAID. It reduces prostaglandin-mediated inflammation and thereby provides analgesic, anti-inflammatory and antipyretic effects. The oral formulation is useful for ongoing management of painful inflammatory conditions when prescribed by a veterinarian.

Indications / Recommended Uses

Melonex 2.5 mg tablets are used for management of pain and inflammation associated with arthritis, osteoarthritis and other musculoskeletal disorders. Veterinary product information also lists otitis, dermatitis and peri-operative inflammation, and use as oral follow-up therapy after injectable Melonex where clinically appropriate. 

Dosage & Administration

For dogs, a current veterinary product listing gives 0.2 mg/kg body weight on Day 1, followed by 0.1 mg/kg once daily from Day 2 onward. However, because each tablet contains 2.5 mg meloxicam, the number/fraction of tablets and duration must be calculated by a Registered Veterinary Practitioner according to body weight and clinical status. 

The chewable tablet may be administered directly or with food.

Precautions

Avoid or use only with specific veterinary assessment in animals with dehydration, gastrointestinal ulceration, kidney disease, liver dysfunction or cardiovascular problems. Do not combine with another NSAID or corticosteroid unless specifically directed by a veterinarian.

Special Caution in Cats

Although some Indian listings describe the 2.5 mg product for dogs and cats, cats require particularly careful meloxicam dosing and safety assessment. A 2.5 mg tablet should never be given as an entire tablet to a cat simply because it is one tablet. Use in cats should be strictly according to an individual veterinary prescription. 

Possible Adverse Effects

Possible NSAID adverse effects include vomiting, diarrhoea, reduced appetite, gastrointestinal irritation or ulceration, lethargy and renal impairment. Stop treatment and seek veterinary advice if significant gastrointestinal symptoms, marked weakness, abnormal drinking/urination or other concerning reactions develop.

Storage

Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C, protected from light and out of reach of children.
