Initial dose on Day 1: Meloxicam 0.2 mg/kg body weight
Maintenance dose from Day 2: Meloxicam 0.1 mg/kg body weight once daily.
For METAFLAM 2.5 mg tablets, SAVA's maintenance-dose chart specifies:
| Dog Body Weight | METAFLAM 2.5 mg |
|---|---|
| 20.1–25 kg | 1 tablet once daily |
| 25.1–35 kg | 1½ tablets once daily |
| 35.1–50 kg | 2 tablets once daily |
The tablets can be halved for accurate dosing and may be administered with or without food.
Duration of Treatment
Clinical response is usually seen within 3–4 days. SAVA's insert states that treatment should be discontinued and the case reassessed if no clinical improvement is apparent after 10 days.
Key Benefits
- Effective pain relief
- Reduces inflammation and swelling
- Helps manage acute and chronic musculoskeletal pain
- Provides antipyretic activity
- Convenient once-daily maintenance dosing
- Scored/halvable chewable tablet for weight-based dosing.
Contraindications & Precautions
Meloxicam should be used only under veterinary supervision. Extra caution is appropriate in dogs with gastrointestinal, kidney, liver, cardiac or bleeding disorders, or in dehydrated/hypovolaemic animals.
Do not combine meloxicam with another NSAID or corticosteroid unless specifically directed by a veterinarian, because this can increase the risk of gastrointestinal ulceration and other adverse effects.
Possible Adverse Effects
NSAID-related adverse reactions can include vomiting, diarrhoea, loss of appetite, lethargy, gastrointestinal irritation/ulceration, and renal or hepatic abnormalities. Stop treatment and contact the veterinarian if significant adverse signs develop.
Withdrawal Period
Not applicable — METAFLAM tablets are labelled for dogs, not food-producing animals.
Storage
Store below 25°C, protected from inappropriate heat and moisture. Keep out of reach of children and animals.
Important Warning
FOR VETERINARY USE ONLY – FOR DOGS.
Do not give additional painkillers, NSAIDs or corticosteroids alongside METAFLAM without veterinary advice. Dose carefully according to the dog's actual body weight.
