Clinical Description

UNIZIF contains flunixin, a potent veterinary NSAID with analgesic, anti-inflammatory and antipyretic activity. It reduces prostaglandin production through cyclooxygenase inhibition, thereby helping control pain, inflammation and fever associated with inflammatory and infectious conditions. 

Indications

According to the Intas veterinary catalogue, flunixin 50 mg/ml is indicated for inflammation and pyrexia associated with bovine respiratory disease, metritis, endotoxemia and acute bovine mastitis. In horses it is indicated for musculoskeletal disorders and visceral pain associated with colic. 

It can therefore be used, under veterinary supervision, for symptomatic control of pain, fever and inflammatory conditions while the underlying disease receives appropriate treatment.

Dosage & Administration

The Intas veterinary catalogue gives cattle, camel, sheep and goats: 1–2 ml per 45 kg body weight by slow IV or IM route; horses: 1 ml per 45 kg body weight by slow IV or IM route; pigs: 1–2 ml per 45 kg body weight by SC or slow IV route. Exact dose, route, frequency and treatment duration should be determined by the Registered Veterinary Practitioner.

Precautions

Use cautiously in animals with dehydration, hypovolaemia, gastrointestinal ulceration or impaired renal, hepatic or cardiovascular function. Avoid simultaneous administration with other NSAIDs or corticosteroids unless specifically directed by a veterinarian, because this can increase gastrointestinal and renal adverse-effect risks. 

Possible Adverse Effects

NSAIDs such as flunixin may cause gastrointestinal irritation/ulceration, renal effects, injection-site reactions or hypersensitivity reactions, particularly with excessive dosing, prolonged treatment or use in dehydrated animals. Rare anaphylactic-like reactions have also been reported with injectable flunixin products. 

Withdrawal Period

For food-producing animals, milk and meat withdrawal requirements must follow the current Indian UNIZIF label/package insert and the veterinarian's instructions. Withdrawal periods should not be copied from foreign flunixin products because approved routes and withdrawal periods can differ by jurisdiction and formulation.

Storage

Store according to the conditions printed on the current Intas UNIZIF vial/carton, protected from inappropriate heat and direct light. Do not use after the stated expiry date.
