Cefuroxime is a second-generation cephalosporin (β-lactam) antibiotic with bactericidal activity against susceptible Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
Clinical Description
UDDERCEF is a veterinary intramammary antibiotic preparation containing Cefuroxime 250 mg per prefilled syringe.
It is formulated for local administration into an affected udder quarter for the treatment of acute and chronic bacterial mastitis caused by organisms susceptible to cefuroxime. Historical manufacturer literature specifically identifies UDDERCEF for acute or chronic mastitis.
Cefuroxime acts by interfering with bacterial cell-wall synthesis, resulting in bactericidal activity against susceptible organisms.
Indications / Recommended Uses
UDDERCEF is indicated for veterinary management of:
- Acute mastitis
- Chronic mastitis
- Susceptible bacterial intramammary infections
- Infection and inflammation of affected udder quarters
- Mastitis caused by organisms demonstrated or expected to be susceptible to cefuroxime
Appropriate veterinary diagnosis is particularly important in recurrent, severe or treatment-resistant mastitis.
Dosage & Administration
Dose: One complete 3.5 g syringe into the affected udder quarter after milking.
Historical manufacturer literature specifies:
One syringe after each milking for 3 consecutive milkings.
Before administration, completely milk out the affected quarter and thoroughly clean and disinfect the teat end.
Carefully introduce the syringe nozzle into the teat canal without contaminating it and slowly infuse the entire contents.
Dosage and duration should ultimately follow the current product label and directions of the Registered Veterinary Practitioner.
Key Benefits
UDDERCEF provides:
- Targeted intramammary antibiotic therapy
- Cefuroxime 250 mg per syringe
- Treatment of acute and chronic mastitis
- Direct antibiotic delivery into the affected udder quarter
- Bactericidal cephalosporin activity
- Activity against susceptible Gram-positive and Gram-negative mastitis-associated bacteria

Contraindications & Precautions
Do not use in animals with known hypersensitivity to cefuroxime, cephalosporins, penicillins or other β-lactam antibiotics.
Maintain strict hygiene during intramammary administration to avoid introducing additional bacteria into the teat canal.
Treatment should be based on appropriate veterinary diagnosis and, where clinically indicated, culture and antimicrobial-susceptibility testing.
Avoid unnecessary or inappropriate antibiotic use because this contributes to antimicrobial resistance.
Use only under the direction of a Registered Veterinary Practitioner.
Withdrawal Period
UDDERCEF is intended for food-producing dairy animals, so applicable milk and meat withdrawal periods must be strictly observed.
The sources reviewed confirm the product, composition, indication and treatment regimen but do not provide a sufficiently reliable current Zenex withdrawal period. Therefore, Rayavets should not publish an assumed withdrawal time.
Follow the withdrawal period stated on the current Zenex product label/pack insert or prescribed by the veterinarian.
Possible Adverse Effects
Possible adverse reactions may include:
- Temporary local irritation or discomfort
- Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
- Rare allergic reactions

Treatment should be discontinued and veterinary attention sought if a significant hypersensitivity reaction occurs.
