Clinical Description
NOBIVAC PUPPY DP is a live attenuated combination vaccine specifically designed for early vaccination of puppies against two serious viral diseases: canine distemper and canine parvovirus disease.
Canine Distemper Virus (CDV) can cause severe systemic disease involving the respiratory, gastrointestinal and nervous systems.
Canine Parvovirus (CPV) causes highly contagious and potentially severe gastrointestinal disease, particularly in young puppies.
NOBIVAC PUPPY DP is designed for use in young puppies, including animals that may still have relatively high levels of maternally derived antibodies (MDA) against distemper and/or parvovirus.
Indications / Recommended Uses
NOBIVAC PUPPY DP is indicated for active immunisation of dogs against:
- Canine Distemper Virus (CDV)
- Canine Parvovirus (CPV) disease
It is particularly useful as an early puppy vaccination where exposure to distemper or parvovirus may occur before the puppy completes its standard vaccination programme.
Vaccination Schedule
According to the current Indian MSD product leaflet, NOBIVAC PUPPY DP can form the early part of a comprehensive puppy vaccination programme.
For puppies where exposure to distemper and/or parvovirus is possible before 8–10 weeks and maternal-antibody status is unknown:
4–6 weeks: NOBIVAC PUPPY DP
8–10 weeks: NOBIVAC DHPPi + NOBIVAC Lepto or L4
12 weeks: NOBIVAC DHPPi + NOBIVAC Lepto or L4, together with the appropriate rabies vaccination according to the veterinarian's programme.
MSD notes that 6 weeks is the earliest age at which maternally derived antibody levels generally do not interfere with Puppy DP vaccination in the majority of puppies, although the Indian leaflet also describes a 4–6-week schedule for puppies at particular early-exposure risk.
Usage Instructions
Reconstitute one vial of NOBIVAC PUPPY DP with one vial of the appropriate NOBIVAC solvent/diluent according to the manufacturer's instructions.
After complete reconstitution, administer one dose subcutaneously using sterile injection equipment.
Because NOBIVAC PUPPY DP protects specifically against distemper and parvovirus, subsequent vaccination with products such as NOBIVAC DHPPi is recommended to broaden protection against additional important canine diseases.
Vaccination should be performed by or under the supervision of a veterinarian.
Key Benefits
NOBIVAC PUPPY DP provides early dual protection against canine distemper and canine parvovirus, two important infectious diseases of young dogs.
Its high-titre parvovirus component is designed for use in young puppies where maternally derived antibodies may still be present.
It can serve as the early foundation of a broader puppy vaccination programme, followed by NOBIVAC DHPPi and appropriate leptospirosis and rabies vaccination.
Precautions
Vaccinate healthy puppies only.
Maternal antibodies can interfere with the immune response to vaccination. Therefore, puppies vaccinated early should receive the subsequent vaccinations recommended in the complete puppy vaccination programme.
Use sterile injection equipment and follow appropriate aseptic procedures.
Because this is a live attenuated vaccine, handling, reconstitution, storage and administration should follow the manufacturer's current product leaflet.
Possible Adverse Effects
As with vaccination generally, some puppies may develop mild and temporary post-vaccination reactions such as local injection-site swelling, transient lethargy or a temporary rise in body temperature.
Rare hypersensitivity reactions may occur following vaccination and require prompt veterinary treatment.
Any significant, persistent or unusual reaction should be evaluated by a veterinarian.
Storage
Store refrigerated at 2°C–8°C.
Protect from light.
Maintain the cold chain during storage and transportation.
Do not use a vaccine that has been improperly stored or has exceeded its labelled expiry date. Follow the storage instructions on the current MSD pack/leaflet.
Important Warning
FOR ANIMAL TREATMENT ONLY. NOT FOR HUMAN USE.
The current Indian product leaflet states that NOBIVAC PUPPY DP is to be sold by retail on the prescription of a Registered Veterinary Practitioner only.
The vaccine should be administered under veterinary supervision as part of an appropriate puppy vaccination programme.
