Composition

Each 5 ML contains:

• Ondansetron Hydrochloride equivalent to Ondansetron – 2 mg
• Flavoured syrup base – q.s.

Ondansetron is a selective 5-HT3 (serotonin) receptor antagonist with potent antiemetic activity.

Clinical Description

EMIKIND PET Syrup is a veterinary antiemetic formulation containing Ondansetron, used to help control nausea and vomiting in dogs and cats.

Ondansetron works by selectively blocking 5-HT3 serotonin receptors involved in triggering the vomiting reflex. These receptors are present both in the gastrointestinal tract and in areas of the central nervous system involved in emesis.

It can therefore provide symptomatic control of vomiting while the veterinarian identifies and treats the underlying cause.

Indications / Recommended Uses

EMIKIND PET may be prescribed for management of:

• Nausea
• Vomiting / emesis
• Vomiting associated with gastroenteritis
• Vomiting associated with gastrointestinal disorders
• Drug-induced nausea and vomiting
• Vomiting associated with certain infections
• Nausea associated with chemotherapy
• Post-operative nausea and vomiting
• Supportive control of vomiting during treatment of other diseases

Dosage & Administration

Ondansetron dosing in dogs and cats should be calculated according to body weight, clinical condition, severity of vomiting and veterinary prescription.

Administer orally in the dose and frequency prescribed by the veterinarian.

Shake the bottle well before administration and measure the dose accurately using an oral syringe or calibrated measuring device.

Do not increase the dose or frequency merely because vomiting continues; persistent vomiting requires veterinary reassessment.

Precautions

• Use under veterinary supervision.
• Persistent vomiting can rapidly cause dehydration and electrolyte imbalance.
• Use cautiously in animals with significant liver impairment.
• Inform the veterinarian about all other medicines the animal is receiving.
• Animals with repeated vomiting, blood in vomit, abdominal swelling, severe abdominal pain, marked weakness or suspected foreign-body ingestion require prompt veterinary evaluation.
• An antiemetic can control the symptom of vomiting but does not treat the underlying disease.

Drug Interactions

Ondansetron may interact with certain medicines affecting serotonin pathways or cardiac rhythm. Concurrent medication should therefore be reviewed by the veterinarian.

Extra caution may be required when the animal is receiving multiple medicines capable of affecting the QT interval or serotonergic activity.

Possible Adverse Effects

Ondansetron is generally well tolerated when appropriately prescribed. Possible adverse effects can include:

• Constipation
• Diarrhoea
• Reduced appetite
• Lethargy or sedation
• Rare hypersensitivity reactions

Significant abnormal heart rhythm or neurological signs require veterinary attention.

Withdrawal Period

Not applicable when used in companion dogs and cats.

Storage

Store in a cool, dry place, protected from direct sunlight and excessive heat. Keep the bottle tightly closed and out of reach of children and animals. Follow the storage conditions printed on the current pack.
