Composition
Each uncoated bolus contains:
- Sulphadimidine IP – 5 g
- Excipients – q.s.
Sulphadimidine (Sulfadimidine/Sulfamethazine) is a systemic sulfonamide antibacterial that inhibits bacterial folate synthesis and thereby suppresses multiplication of susceptible bacteria.
Clinical Description
SULPHA Bolus is an oral veterinary sulfonamide antibacterial medicine containing Sulphadimidine 5 g per bolus.
It is intended for treatment of susceptible bacterial infections in livestock. Manufacturer product literature specifically lists calf scours, bacterial enteritis and acute bacterial infections among its major indications.
Sulphadimidine is primarily bacteriostatic, interfering with folic-acid synthesis required for bacterial growth and multiplication.
Indications / Recommended Uses
SULPHA Bolus is used under veterinary supervision for:
- Calf scours of susceptible bacterial origin
- Bacterial enteritis
- Acute susceptible bacterial infections
- Gastrointestinal bacterial infections
- Other sulphadimidine-sensitive infections where sulfonamide therapy is considered appropriate
The product should be used for susceptible bacterial disease, rather than indiscriminately for diarrhoea from parasitic, viral, dietary or other non-bacterial causes.
Dosage & Administration
Route: Oral
Historical manufacturer product literature specifies:
Initial dose: 1–2 boli per 50 kg body weight
Subsequent dose: Half of the initial dose daily for 3–5 days.
Adequate access to drinking water is particularly important during sulfonamide treatment.
The actual dose and duration should be determined according to the animal's body weight, clinical condition and veterinary diagnosis.
Key Benefits
SULPHA Bolus provides:
- Sulphadimidine 5 g per bolus
- Systemic sulfonamide antibacterial activity
- Treatment support for bacterial enteritis
- Management of susceptible bacterial calf scours
- Use in susceptible acute bacterial infections
- Convenient oral bolus administration
- Established use in livestock antimicrobial therapy
- Suitable for cattle, buffaloes, sheep and goats under veterinary supervision.
Contraindications & Precautions
Do not administer to animals with known hypersensitivity to sulfonamides.
Use cautiously in animals with:
- Kidney impairment
- Liver dysfunction
- Severe dehydration
- Urinary tract obstruction or impaired urine production
- Blood disorders associated with sulfonamide therapy
Ensure animals have adequate access to clean drinking water, unless otherwise directed by the veterinarian.
Treatment should be completed for the prescribed duration. Inappropriate dosing or unnecessary antimicrobial use may contribute to antimicrobial resistance.
Withdrawal Period
SULPHA Bolus is intended for food-producing animals, so applicable milk and meat withdrawal periods must be strictly observed.
The current Zenex public livestock listing does not provide specific withdrawal periods for Sulpha Bolus.
Possible Adverse Effects
Sulfonamides are generally tolerated at appropriate doses, but possible adverse reactions may include:
- Reduced appetite
- Gastrointestinal upset
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Crystalluria/urinary complications, particularly when hydration is inadequate
- Renal effects in susceptible or dehydrated animals
- Rare hematological abnormalities with prolonged treatment
