Composition

Each BIOCLAN 600 MG Tablet contains:

• Clindamycin Hydrochloride USP – 600 mg
• Excipients – q.s.

SAVA lists BIOCLAN tablets in 150 mg, 300 mg and 600 mg strengths. 

Clinical Description

BIOCLAN contains Clindamycin, a lincosamide antimicrobial that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis through binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit. It is particularly useful against susceptible Gram-positive and anaerobic bacteria.

The official SAVA information lists BIOCLAN for infected wounds, abscesses, dental infections, superficial pyoderma and osteomyelitis in dogs, with additional veterinary uses in cats. 

Indications / Recommended Uses

In Dogs:

• Infected wounds and abscesses
• Infected oral cavity and dental infections
• Antimicrobial coverage during dental procedures
• Superficial pyoderma
• Osteomyelitis
• Other susceptible infections based on veterinary diagnosis. 

SAVA specifically identifies susceptible organisms including Staphylococcus spp., Streptococcus spp., Bacteroides spp., Fusobacterium necrophorum and Clostridium perfringens. 

In Cats: SAVA also lists BIOCLAN for respiratory infections and toxoplasmosis. 

Dosage & Administration

According to SAVA:

• Dental infections in dogs: 11 mg/kg once daily for 7–10 days
• Osteomyelitis in dogs: 11 mg/kg every 12 hours for 28 days
• Cats: 5 mg/kg twice daily or 10 mg/kg once daily
• Feline toxoplasmosis: 25 mg/kg once daily for 7–10 days. 

Because each tablet contains 600 mg, the dose must be calculated carefully according to the animal's body weight and condition. A whole 600-mg tablet should not automatically be given simply because it is the available strength.

Contraindications & Precautions

Do not use in animals with known hypersensitivity to Clindamycin or Lincomycin. Clindamycin should not be extrapolated for use in herbivorous species such as rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters or horses, where lincosamides can cause severe gastrointestinal disturbances.

For prolonged treatment, particularly at higher doses, veterinary monitoring may be appropriate in animals with significant liver or kidney dysfunction.

Possible Adverse Effects

Potential adverse effects include vomiting, diarrhoea, reduced appetite and other gastrointestinal disturbances. Persistent vomiting, severe diarrhoea, blood in stool or signs of hypersensitivity warrant veterinary reassessment.

Antimicrobial Stewardship

The official insert recommends identifying the involved pathogen and establishing susceptibility to clindamycin before initiating therapy where practical. This is particularly important for recurrent, deep or prolonged infections. 

Withdrawal Period

Not applicable for the labelled companion-animal use. BIOCLAN 600 MG should not be extrapolated to food-producing animals without an approved indication and established withdrawal period.

Storage

Follow the storage conditions printed on the current BIOCLAN carton/strip and package insert. Keep the tablets dry, protected from inappropriate heat and out of reach of children.

BIOCLAN 600 MG is a high-strength clindamycin tablet. Dose and treatment duration vary substantially between dental infections, skin infections, osteomyelitis and toxoplasmosis, so treatment should follow veterinary diagnosis and body-weight calculation.
