Composition

Each BIOCLAN 300 MG Tablet contains:

• Clindamycin Hydrochloride equivalent to Clindamycin – 300 mg
• Excipients – q.s.

Clindamycin is a lincosamide antibiotic that inhibits susceptible bacterial protein synthesis by acting at the 50S ribosomal subunit. 

Clinical Description

BIOCLAN is a systemic veterinary antibiotic for susceptible aerobic Gram-positive and anaerobic bacterial infections. SAVA lists activity/use in dogs for conditions including infected wounds, abscesses, dental infections, osteomyelitis, recurrent superficial pyoderma and respiratory infections. 

In cats, SAVA lists clindamycin for respiratory infections and toxoplasmosis. 

Indications / Recommended Uses

In Dogs:

• Infected wounds and abscesses
• Dental/oral infections
• Superficial pyoderma
• Osteomyelitis
• Respiratory tract infections caused by susceptible organisms
• Other susceptible bacterial infections as determined by the veterinarian. 

In Cats:

• Susceptible bacterial infections
• Respiratory infections
• Toxoplasmosis, when clindamycin is considered appropriate by the veterinarian. 

Dosage & Administration

SAVA's official dosing information specifies:

Dogs

• Superficial pyoderma: 5.5 mg/kg every 12 hours for 21 days
• Dental infections, wounds & abscesses: 11 mg/kg every 24 hours for 7–10 days
• Osteomyelitis: 11 mg/kg every 12 hours for a minimum of 28 days

For osteomyelitis, if there is no clinical response within 14 days, SAVA advises stopping treatment and reassessing the diagnosis. 

Cats

• 5 mg/kg twice daily, or
• 10 mg/kg once daily
• For toxoplasmosis: 25 mg/kg daily for 7–10 days. 

Because this tablet contains 300 mg, it should not automatically be given as one whole tablet; the correct amount depends on body weight, species and condition.

Contraindications & Precautions

Do not use in animals with known hypersensitivity to Clindamycin or Lincomycin.

Clindamycin should not be administered to rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, horses, cattle and certain other herbivores, because severe gastrointestinal disturbances may occur. 

Use cautiously in animals with significant liver or kidney dysfunction, particularly during prolonged treatment.

Possible Adverse Effects

Potential adverse effects include:

• Vomiting
• Diarrhoea
• Reduced appetite
• Gastrointestinal upset

Persistent or severe diarrhoea, repeated vomiting or another unusual reaction warrants veterinary reassessment. 

Antimicrobial Stewardship

BIOCLAN is a prescription antibiotic. The correct dose and duration depend on the infection. For recurrent, deep or severe infections, bacterial culture and antimicrobial-susceptibility testing should be considered.

Do not stop the antibiotic course prematurely simply because clinical signs improve.

Withdrawal Period

Not applicable for its labelled companion-animal use in dogs and cats. BIOCLAN tablets should not be extrapolated for treatment of food-producing livestock.

Storage

Store below 30°C, protected from excessive heat and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.

BIOCLAN 300 MG should be used according to veterinary diagnosis and body weight. Avoid unnecessary antibiotic use to reduce the development of antimicrobial resistance.
