Composition

Each 100 mL contains:

• Dextrose Anhydrous IP – 20 g
• Sodium Chloride IP – 0.60 g
• Potassium Chloride IP – 0.04 g
• Calcium Chloride Dihydrate IP – 0.027 g
• Sodium Lactate USP – 0.312 g
• Water for Injection IP – q.s. 

Therefore, a 500 mL bottle supplies approximately 100 g dextrose, together with sodium, potassium, calcium, chloride and lactate electrolytes.

Clinical Description

RINTOSE is a veterinary hypertonic dextrose-electrolyte IV infusion designed to provide both rapid energy and electrolyte/fluid support.

The 20% dextrose component provides an immediately available energy source and supports animals with hypoglycaemia and debility. Sodium, potassium and calcium help replenish important electrolytes, while sodium lactate provides alkalinizing support in animals with systemic acidosis when clinically appropriate. 

Indications / Recommended Uses

According to Vetoquinol, RINTOSE is indicated in:

• Diarrhoea
• Dehydration
• Debility and weakness
• Systemic acidosis
• Hypoglycaemia
• Septicaemia as supportive fluid therapy alongside treatment of the underlying cause
• Disturbed electrolyte balance
• Muscular weakness 

Dosage & Administration

Route: Intravenous infusion only.

For diarrhoea, dehydration and debility:

• Cattle, Buffaloes & Horses: 500–2,000 mL/day for 3–4 days
• Sheep & Goats: 100–200 mL/day for 2–3 days
• Calves: 100–500 mL/day for 2–3 days

For systemic acidosis:

• Cattle & Buffaloes: 1,000–2,000 mL/day

Or as directed by the veterinarian. 

The actual volume and infusion rate should be determined from the animal's body weight, hydration status, cardiovascular condition, electrolyte status and severity of fluid loss.

Contraindications & Precautions

RINTOSE should be administered intravenously under veterinary supervision.

Use cautiously in animals with significant cardiac or renal impairment, fluid overload, hyperglycaemia or major electrolyte abnormalities.

The infusion rate and total volume should be adjusted carefully. Excessive or rapid IV administration can contribute to fluid overload, electrolyte disturbances or metabolic abnormalities.

In septicaemia, RINTOSE provides supportive fluid and metabolic therapy only; it does not replace appropriate antimicrobial and other specific treatment.

Withdrawal Period

RINTOSE is a dextrose-electrolyte supportive infusion, not an antimicrobial drug. However, a specific current Indian milk/meat withdrawal statement was not identified in the official product-manual entry reviewed. 

For food-producing animals, follow the current Vetoquinol India label/pack insert and veterinarian's instructions.

Possible Adverse Effects

When administered appropriately, electrolyte-dextrose infusions are generally well tolerated. Potential problems associated with inappropriate volume or infusion rate can include:

• Hyperglycaemia
• Local irritation or phlebitis at the IV site
• Metabolic disturbances from excessive administration
