Clinical Description
K-PET contains Ketoconazole, a synthetic imidazole antifungal agent. It inhibits the fungal cytochrome P450-dependent enzyme lanosterol 14α-demethylase, interfering with synthesis of ergosterol, an essential component of the fungal cell membrane. Depletion of ergosterol disrupts fungal membrane structure and function.
Indications / Recommended Uses
K-PET is used in dogs and cats for susceptible fungal infections including dermatomycosis (ringworm), Malassezia dermatitis, aspergillosis, cryptococcosis, coccidioidomycosis, histoplasmosis and blastomycosis. Ketoconazole may also be used by veterinarians as an alternative treatment in selected dogs with hyperadrenocorticism (Cushing's syndrome).
Dosage & Administration
Dogs: 5–15 mg/kg body weight twice daily
Cats: 5–10 mg/kg body weight twice daily
Administer with food, as absorption is better when given with a meal. The exact dose and treatment duration depend on the fungal infection and clinical response. Some systemic fungal infections can require treatment for several months.
Key Benefits
K-PET provides systemic antifungal activity against a range of susceptible yeasts and fungi. It can be useful for superficial fungal skin disease as well as selected systemic mycoses when prescribed appropriately by a veterinarian.
Contraindications & Precautions
Do not use in pregnant or lactating dogs or cats. Avoid use in animals with liver disease, clotting disorders or known hypersensitivity to ketoconazole. Ketoconazole can cause clinically important drug interactions, so the veterinarian should be informed of all other medicines the animal is receiving.
Because ketoconazole can cause hepatotoxicity, liver function monitoring may be appropriate during prolonged therapy.
Possible Adverse Effects
Reported adverse reactions include vomiting, diarrhoea, nausea, reduced appetite, lethargy, itching and inflammation. More serious adverse effects can include liver injury and blood abnormalities. Ketoconazole can also interfere with testosterone production in male animals.
Drug Interactions
Ketoconazole can interact with multiple medicines, including certain benzodiazepines, calcium-channel blockers, cyclosporine, ivermectin, digoxin and some other drugs. Concurrent treatment should therefore be reviewed by a veterinarian.
Withdrawal Period
Not applicable — K-PET is labelled for dogs and cats, not food-producing animals.
Storage
Store below 30°C, protected from inappropriate heat and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Important Warning
FOR ANIMAL TREATMENT ONLY – NOT FOR HUMAN USE.
K-PET is a systemic antifungal medicine and should be administered under veterinary supervision. Long-term therapy may require monitoring of liver function, particularly if the animal develops poor appetite, vomiting, marked lethargy or jaundice.
