Composition
Each APOQUEL 16 mg Tablet contains:
Oclacitinib – 16 mg
(as Oclacitinib Maleate)
Oclacitinib is a synthetic Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitor that modulates cytokine signalling involved in allergic inflammation and itching.
Clinical Description
APOQUEL is a targeted anti-itch veterinary medicine for dogs. By inhibiting JAK-dependent cytokine signalling involved in pruritus and allergic inflammation, it helps control itching associated with allergic skin disease without being a corticosteroid.
Indications
APOQUEL is indicated in dogs 12 months of age or older for:
- Pruritus associated with allergic dermatitis
- Atopic dermatitis
- Allergic itching, redness and associated skin inflammation.
Dosage & Administration
The recommended dose is 0.4–0.6 mg oclacitinib/kg body weight orally, twice daily for up to 14 days, followed by the same dose once daily for maintenance, when continued treatment is considered appropriate by the veterinarian. It may be administered with or without food.
For the 16 mg tablet, the official dosing chart is:
| Dog Body Weight | APOQUEL 16 mg |
|---|---|
| 13.5–19.9 kg | ½ tablet |
| 27.0–39.9 kg | 1 tablet |
| 40.0–54.9 kg | 1½ tablets |
| 55.0–80.0 kg | 2 tablets |
Dogs in the intervening weight ranges may require another tablet strength or combination to achieve the recommended dose.
Key Benefits
APOQUEL provides targeted control of allergic itching and atopic dermatitis, helping reduce scratching and associated skin irritation. It can be administered with or without food and is suitable for veterinarian-directed maintenance treatment when ongoing control is required.
Contraindications & Precautions
Do not use in dogs under 12 months of age. It should not be used in dogs with serious infections. Because oclacitinib modulates immune function, it can increase susceptibility to infections and may worsen existing parasitic skin infestations or pre-existing neoplastic conditions.
It is also not recommended for breeding, pregnant or lactating dogs. Long-term therapy should be periodically reviewed by a veterinarian.
Possible Adverse Effects
Reported adverse effects can include vomiting and diarrhoea. Because of its immunomodulatory action, infections and other clinically important changes should be monitored during treatment, particularly with prolonged use.
Withdrawal Period
Not applicable, because APOQUEL is indicated for dogs, not food-producing animals.
Storage
Store below 30°C, protected from inappropriate heat and moisture, and keep out of reach of children and animals.
Important Warning
FOR ANIMAL TREATMENT ONLY – DOGS ONLY.
APOQUEL is a prescription immunomodulatory medicine. It should be administered under veterinary supervision, particularly during long-term therapy. Persistent skin disease should also be evaluated for underlying causes such as ectoparasites, infection, food allergy or environmental allergens.
